Cynthia Liu

My goal is to help people of all ages gain the skills and confidence needed to reach their goals, both in the water and on land. Proper form, efficiency, physics, and human physiology all play a role in how our bodies move through water (and through life), and proper technique can greatly reduce a person’s risk of injury. If you’re looking for dry land training to complement your swim, or just wanting to work on strength training for balance in your daily life, I’d love to walk through the process with you and help you reach your goals.

As a swim instructor, I understand that learning to swim is not one-size-fits-all, and there are both physical and mental components to the process of learning and/ or perfecting something new. My job is to listen to you, understand your goals, and help you gain the skills and mindset you need to reach those goals. Having both age group swimming experience, as well as experience as an open water swimmer (and lifeguard at numerous triathlons from sprints to full Ironman length), I hope to provide you not only with the skills you need, but with the context to help you understand why those skills are important.

I grew up in and around the water, began swimming competitively at age 5, and started teaching swim lessons in middle school. As a swimmer, my personal experience includes 12 years of competitive swimming as well as several lake and ocean swims, ranging from 1500m as part of an Olympic Triathlon to a 10K+ swim in Lake Monona.

Whether you are a triathlete looking to improve your open water technique, a swimmer who has decided that now is the time to add more dry land to your training, or you simply want to learn to swim–progressing from fear and frustration to respect and confidence in the water–I have experience working with people of all ages and ability levels. Wherever you are starting out, wherever you hope to be, I want to work with you to help reach your goals.
